From 2010 onwards, I would no longer go to my grandmother’s. By then, she was no longer living there. Memories I had from that room I recently checked against its faithful duplication, which was by now empty, though. From a chronological standpoint, time has gone by, but the house has stood still in its own time, and it still carries the comfort of its essence. I first decided to depict this room after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, which proved fatal, and which struck its final blow upon her. In trying to oppose the loss of memory, which was inherent to her, I meant to keep the house, in the photographic record as well as in time. The idea was to pay a visit to the house, and to show the rooms and objects that were more representative of her identity: a deeply rooted Catholicism, someone who very soon was compelled to live all by herself. The last photo shows the building door closed, a black rectangle signaling the closing down of the house, its stories and the life it hosted.
